Queers of Yesteryear is a playful illustration of the legitimate role fashion played in the formation of a shared gay identity among homosexual men in the latter half of the 20th century.
For my senior thesis, I created a series of 5 paper dolls with two outfits each. Each doll corresponded with a decade from 1950-1990. Through play with these paper dolls, the audience is encouraged to learn about gay history and culture while effectively working to break the strict work/play dichotomy of the dolls’ outward expression, bringing the two selves closer together and into the present.
